Accredited BSL Courses

We are currently able to offer BSL level 1.

A 25-week or 33-week course (depending on location), at 2-3 hours per week, including assessments. The course teaches you conversational BSL to be able to communicate with Deaf people on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language. You will gain basic skills and confidence in BSL.

Starting at £450 per person.

A non-refundable deposit of £100 will be required upon booking.

BSL Level 1

Entry Requirements

There are no set entry requirements to be able to do BSL level 1, however BSL competence standards require candidates to have sufficient sight, manual dexterity, facial and body movement to produce and receive BSL.

We recommend that candidates do the Basic Introduction to Sign Language course before attempting to do the BSL level 1, to be sure that they will enjoy learning the subject before committing to 33 weeks of learning.

Level 1 Award in British Sign Language is suitable for those who: 

  • want to learn basic language skills to communicate simple conversations with Deaf people

  • want to learn new language skills as part of a programme of study

  • want to progress to more advanced study and/or employment using BSL in the future

  • are studying for personal development

  • are parents, family, friends or colleagues of Deaf people.

What is involved?

The BSL level 1 qualification involves approximately 60 hours of face-to-face learning and 3 assessments. The qualification is accredited by Signature and taught by our own fully qualified Sign Language teacher, who is also a member of the deaf community. The course will be structured as follows.

  • 10x 2hr lessons
  • Assessment 101 – marked by our in house teacher.
  • 10x 2hr lessons
  • Assessment 102 – marked by Signature
  • 10x 2 hr lessons
  • Assessment 103 – marked by Signature​

All classes will run weekly. All assessments will take place at our centre and will be recorded. These will then be submitted to Signature for marking.

Qualification objectives

At the end of the qualification, learner

  • understand and use a limited range of simple words and sentences in BSL

  • take part in simple, everyday conversations in BSL

  • give and follow simple directions or instructions in BSL

  • give and follow simple familiar statements or descriptions in BSL.​

Progression routes

On completion of Signature Level 1 Award in British Sign Language, a wide range of further qualifications are available, including:

Signature Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language

Signature Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language.
